UPhongolo Local Municipality elections
The uPhongolo Local Municipality council consists of twenty-nine members elected by mixed-member proportional representation. Fifteen councillors are elected by first-past-the-post voting in fifteen wards, while the remaining fourteen are chosen from party lists so that the total number of party representatives is proportional to the number of votes received. In the election of 1 November 2021 the Inkatha Freedom Party won a majority of fifteen seats.

The following by-elections were held to fill vacant ward seats in the period from November 2021.Following the by-election on 2 April 2025, the Inkatha Freedom Party losts its majority, falling from 15 of the 29 seats to 14. It will likely work with the Democratic Alliance to retain its positions.
