List of power stations in Illinois


This is a list of electricity-generating power stations in the U.S. state of Illinois, sorted by type and name. In 2023, Illinois had a total summer capacity of 45,419 MW and a net generation of 177,737 GWh through all of its power plants. In 2024, the electrical energy generation mix was approximately 53.3% nuclear, 17.2% natural gas, 14.5% coal, 13.1% wind, 1.5% solar, 0.1% biomass, 0.1% petroleum & other gases, less than 0.1% hydroelectric, and 0.1% other. Small-scale solar, which includes customer-owned photovoltaic panels, delivered an additional net 1,925 GWh of energy to the state's electrical grid in 2024.
As of 2024, Illinois generates more energy from its six nuclear power stations than any other U.S. state. Legislation in 2016 and 2021 provided state financial incentives which delayed the closure of several plants.
