Volcano Express
Volcano Express is an immersive exhibition located in Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavík, Iceland. It presents Icelandic volcanic activity through large-format visual media and interpretive narration. The exhibition combines eruption footage, scientific information, and multisensory effects to communicate the geological processes associated with Iceland's active volcanism.Overview
Volcano Express is part of Iceland's geotourism sector, which has increased rapidly since the 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajökull. The immersive exhibition depicts the country's volcanic systems, rifting processes, and eruptive behavior using high-resolution video and sound. It is designed for general audiences and draws on research from Icelandic and international geological institutions.Content and format
The exhibition incorporates archival and contemporary footage of eruptions in Iceland; drone, satellite, and ground-based imagery; explanations of magma composition; tectonic plate movement and volcanic architecture; descriptions of environmental interactions such as glacial modification and sediment transport. Volcano Express is presented on wrap-around LED screens accompanied by audio and environmental effects including wind, heat, and vibration.Development
According to a 2025 interview, the concept for the exhibition originated in 2019 and entered active development in 2020–2021, inspired by the ongoing eruptions on the Reykjanes peninsula. Creator Kristján Ra. Kristjánsson has stated that the installation in Harpa Concert Hall involved total expenditures exceeding 500 million Icelandic króna, attributed to technical and design requirements.
