The Lathe


The Lathe is the official student publication of Batangas State University Pablo Borbon campus in Batangas City, Philippines. It serves as the primary source of news and information for the university's student body. The publication releases newspapers, magazines, and literary folios throughout the academic year.

History

The publication was named after the lathe, a machine tool used to shape metal or wood, which references the university's origins as a trade school and manual training institution. The earliest known issue of The Lathe was released in 1966.
Throughout its history, the publication has reported on significant campus and community events. In February 2024, national media outlets such as The Philippine Star and The Manila Times cited reports from The Lathe regarding security incidents on campus.

Publications

The organization produces five distinct editions annually, covering news, student opinion, and the arts:
  • The Lathe Newsletter – The primary news organ of the university.
  • Ang Lalik – A tabloid published in the Filipino language.
  • Sensus Communis – A journal edition focusing on student opinion and essays.
  • The Lathe Literary Folio – A compilation of student poetry and fiction.
  • The Lathe Art Compilation – A collection of visual art and photography.

    Awards

The Lathe participates in regional and national campus journalism competitions. It has been recognized by the Catholic Mass Media Awards.
  • 2014: The Lathe Literary Folio: Confiteor received a Special Citation for Literary Publication at the 36th CMMA.
  • 2019: Sensus Communis: The Lathe Journal was awarded a Special Citation for Best Student Organ at the 41st CMMA.
