Te Awa, Napier
Te Awa is a suburb of the city of Napier, in the Hawke's Bay region of New Zealand's eastern North Island.
The suburb consists of a mix of 1920s small railway workers' houses which survived the 1931 Hawke's Bay earthquake, Art Deco homes built during the 1960s and 1970s, and twenty-first century subdivisions.
The New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage gives a translation of "the valley" for Te Awa.
Demographics
The statistical area of McLean Park, which corresponds to Te Awa, covers and had an estimated population of as of with a population density of people per km2.McLean Park had a population of 2,484 in the 2023 New Zealand census, a decrease of 66 people since the 2018 census, and an increase of 78 people since the 2013 census. There were 1,191 males, 1,287 females, and 6 people of other genders in 1,032 dwellings. 3.5% of people identified as LGBTIQ+. The median age was 40.9 years. There were 408 people aged under 15 years, 486 aged 15 to 29, 1,155 aged 30 to 64, and 438 aged 65 or older.
People could identify as more than one ethnicity. The results were 85.5% European ; 22.5% Māori; 3.3% Pasifika; 5.0% Asian; 0.6% Middle Eastern, Latin American and African New Zealanders ; and 3.0% other, which includes people giving their ethnicity as "New Zealander". English was spoken by 97.1%, Māori by 4.8%, Samoan by 0.4%, and other languages by 7.7%. No language could be spoken by 2.3%. New Zealand Sign Language was known by 0.6%. The percentage of people born overseas was 15.8, compared with 28.8% nationally.
Religious affiliations were 26.3% Christian, 0.8% Hindu, 0.4% Islam, 0.7% Māori religious beliefs, 0.7% Buddhist, 0.6% New Age, 0.1% Jewish, and 2.1% other religions. People who answered that they had no religion were 61.7%, and 6.5% of people did not answer the census question.
Of those at least 15 years old, 468 people had a bachelor's or higher degree, 1,170 had a post-high school certificate or diploma, and 438 people exclusively held high school qualifications. The median income was $40,900, compared with $41,500 nationally. 177 people earned over $100,000 compared to 12.1% nationally. The employment status of those at least 15 was 1,089 full-time, 276 part-time, and 48 unemployed.
