Stockholm Center for Freedom


The Stockholm Center for Freedom is an advocacy organization founded in 2017 by the Turkish journalist Abdullah Bozkurt. The SCF has been headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden due to the Turkish government crackdown on freedom of the press. The group is mainly focused on issues related to human rights and press freedom in Turkey.
The Stockholm Center for Freedom has allegedly been linked to the pro-Islamism Gülen movement, which has been labeled a terrorist organisation by the Government of Turkey.

History

The Stockholm Center for Freedom was founded in organization founded in 2017 by Abdullah Bozkurt. The SCF headquarters is located Stockholm, Sweden and journalist Levent Kenez serves as its Secretary General. The group moved to Sweden after the government crackdown on press freedom in Turkey after the failed 2016 coup d'état attempt, which the government blamed on Gülenists. The group is mainly focused on issues related to human rights and freedom of the press in Turkey, although it occasionally reports on other countries as well. It has issued a number of reports in both English and Turkish on the human rights situation in Turkey.

Alleged links to the Gülen movement

The Stockholm Center for Freedom has been accused by Turkish media of having links to the pro-Islamism Gülen movement, which has been designated as a terrorist organization by the Turkish Government. Bozkurt was formerly a bureau chief for the English-language edition of Zaman, a Gülen-aligned newspaper. Due to the alleged ties between the SCF and FETÖ, and his membership in the movement, Bozkurt is a fugitive with a warrant out for his arrest.
