Southampton Football League

The Southampton Football League is a long running Saturday grassroots football competition based in Hampshire, England.
It is affiliated to the Hampshire Football Association, and at level 12 on the English football league system, is a feeder to the Hampshire Premier League.

History

Football had been played in the area for many years, but with the growing need for proper organisation, the Southampton Football Association was founded in 1908 at a meeting attended by 40 persons, including William Pickford. It was here that league and cup competitions were created, in the Senior and Junior format, which mostly remains in place today.
Over the years, the League grew in popularity with a vast number of works teams, college old boys sides and village clubs taking part - some of these still exist today, whilst others have long since disappeared.
Subject to ground requirements, champions of the top-flight have always been eligible to apply for promotion to the Hampshire League, and it is from here that many well-known clubs began before progressing on to greater things. Most notably, this alumni list includes Eastleigh, AFC Totton Sholing, along with ten other clubs who are now well-established in the Wessex League. A number of professional players also played in the competition, either at a young age or at the tail-end of their careers.
In an effort to raise standards and bridge the gap with the county league, in 1963 the Premier Division was formed. During the sixties and seventies the Southampton League was at its peak in popularity with a constitution that regularly consisted of over 160 teams, evenly spread across three Senior and up to ten Junior Divisions.
Member clubs have also performed well in external competitions, with a number of sides winning the Hampshire FA Intermediate and Junior Cups. It is a similar story with the Southampton FA, although not since 1986 has a side won the prestigious Senior Cup.
Since 1993, the League has been run independently from the Southampton Football Association, and in 1999 it became one of the first in the country to introduce a Veterans section. The new millennium saw the introduction of domestic league cup competitions for each level.
With the expansion of leagues higher up the pyramid and the general decline in the grassroots game, the Southampton League has since been reduced in size but in attempt to maintain numbers it has expanded its boundary to accommodate clubs from other areas where leagues have sadly folded.
Bush Hill hold the record for the winning the Premier Division title five consecutive seasons from 2009 to 2013, although it is their arch-rivals Nursling who hold the record for the most overall titles, having won it on six occasions.
Since 2024, the Senior section now only consists of the Premier Division, which sits at level 12 on the national pyramid system. Clubs who finish in the top three are eligible to apply to join the Hampshire Premier League - where depending on playing strength and facilities, they can either go directly in to the Senior Division or sideways to Division 1.
