Shanklin F.C.


Shanklin F.C. are a long running amateur football club based in Shanklin, Isle of Wight.
The club are affiliated to the Hampshire Football Association and are long serving members of the Isle of Wight League.
They have two men's teams, a ladies team competing in the Southern Region Women's Football League and several youth sides.

History

Shanklin were founded in 1888 and initially played friendly matches until becoming founder members of the Isle of Wight League in 1898.
Apart from a brief spell during the 1920s playing in the Hampshire League, the club have always played in the competition, with the first team frequently alternating between Divisions 1 and 2.
In August 1988 Shanklin celebrated their centenary when they hosted Wimbledon, who had recently won the FA Cup. The 'Dons fielded a strong side and comfortably won 0-6, although not without incident when Vinny Jones was sent-off and was suspended for their forthcoming FA Charity Shield match at Wembley the following week!
Shanklin have a fine cup pedigree, winning the Isle of Wight Challenge Cup nine times - the most recent occasion was in 2006.
The 2022/23 season was their most memorable after the first team retained the Division 1 title and also won the Isle of Wight Memorial Cup.

Ground

Shanklin FC play at the County Ground, Green Lane, Shanklin, PO37 7EU.
The pitch is enclosed with a fixed barrier. The venue has a large car park and club house with plenty of memorabilia on display with a licensed bar.
The record attendance was over 1,500 in August 1988 for the centenary match against Wimbledon. A temporary stand was erected for the fixture.

Local rivals

Shanklin enjoy a long running rivalry with a number of local clubs including Shanklin VYCC, Sandown, Brading Town and Ventnor.
