"Shadow of a Man" is a 2025 song by Lady Gaga that was recorded for her seventh studio album, Mayhem. It was written and produced by Gaga, Andrew Watt, and Henry Walter—also known as Cirkut. The track was first teased in the concert special Gaga Chromatica Ball. It is a disco and electropop song that conveys a message of women's empowerment.
Music journalists gave "Shadow of a Man" a generally positive reception, and highlighted Michael Jackson's influence on the production and Gaga's singing style. In 2025–2026, Gaga performed the song live during various promotional concerts, the Mayhem Ball tour, as well as her one-off Mayhem: Requiem concert.
Release and composition
"Shadow of a Man" was written and produced by Lady Gaga with Andrew Watt and Cirkut. It was first teased with a short clip of the song at the end of Gaga Chromatica Ball, a concert film of Gaga's 2022 stadium tour in support of the album Chromatica. The full track was released in 2025 as the eleventh track of the standard edition of her studio album Mayhem.Talking about the song shortly after the album's release, Gaga said: "In my career, I was often the only woman in the room, and this record was a chance to proclaim that I've learned how to dance in the shadow of those men". She also said it is the track from Mayhem that probably best represents where she was in her life at that time. Beats Per Minute interpreted the song's lyrics as a message of empowerment, particularly for pop artists facing constant scrutiny and questions about their relevance. Billboard highlighted the way in "Shadow of a Man", Gaga critiques the unequal pressures on female artists, who are expected to work harder for less recognition than are men. As the song builds to an intense, high-energy chorus, she fiercely pushes back, refusing to keep accepting blame for things that were not her fault. Mary Siroky of Consequence described "Shadow of a Man" as "emotionally resonant" and noted it represents the undeniable peak of the album's energy. AllMusic's Neil Z. Yeung found it an "effortless pop anthem". Variety Steven J. Horowitz said the track "struts with the type of cool of wearing sunglasses at night". Gary Grimes of Attitude chose "Shadow of a Man" as a standout moment on Mayhem that amplifies the album's momentum and pairs well with the lead single "Disease". He said the closing electric-guitar riff adds a memorable punch, leaving listeners wanting more of that sound. According to Beats Per Minute, "Shadow of a Man" is an "addictive", "defiant and triumphant" track that would have made an excellent album closer and is a strong candidate for a future single. David Cobbald of The Line of Best Fit said tracks such as "Zombieboy" and "Shadow of a Man" are "top scoring on the record".Screen Rant Chris Hedden said "Shadow of a Man" is "an empowering bop that reminds the listener that with the talent she has, Lady Gaga won't be put into anybody's shadow. Whether they be men or otherwise." Elle included the song in its list of the best new songs the reviewers heard in March 2025, saying: "With rapid-fire lyrics and an infectious energy, it's one of the high points of her latest album". Alim Kheraj of Dazed wrote Mayhem shows a confident maturity, and "Shadow of a Man" stands out because in the hands of a "less assured artist", it "could easily have slipped into either self-pity or saccharine self-empowerment, but instead we find Gaga as the emboldened final form last seen strutting away from fires of the 'Marry The Night' video". A writer for the Iowa State Daily chose "Shadow of a Man", "The Beast", and "Blade of Grass" as standouts, and said: "All of these showcase Gaga's great lyricism and they break down the album's themes. 'Shadow of a Man' is pretty explanatory for what it means just from the title."
Billboard Stephen Daw ranked "Shadow of a Man" as the fifth-best track on Mayhem, highlighting its message of female empowerment and the "bulldozing chorus". According to Vulture Kristen S. Hé, the song is "infectious, but it arguably suffers the most for being cut from the same cloth as Mayhem other disco-funk tracks". According to Peter Piatkowski of PopMatters, "Shadow of a Man" is "perfectly serviceable MTV-pop" that "sounds like warmed-over 1980s dance-pop karaoke". The Independent Adam White said "Michael Jackson would be proud" of the track, which is "not Gaga at her best, but a shimmering bit of Eighties disco funk all the same". Ludovic Hunter-Tilney of Financial Times wrote "Shadow of a Man" is "impressive" in imitating Michael Jackson, "but with scant purpose beyond that". "Shadow of a Man" was ranked in the top three of Billboard March 2025 poll of fans' favorite track on the album.
Commercial performance
In the United States, "Shadow of a Man" failed to enter the Billboard Hot 100, but reached number two on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart and peaked at number eleven on the Hot Dance/Pop Songs chart. In Canada, the track debuted at number 91 on the Canadian Hot 100. Across Latin America, the track topped the Peru Anglo chart and reached number two on the Venezuela Anglo Airplay ranking, both of which are compiled by Monitor Latino. On Billboard’s Global 200 chart, "Shadow of a Man" debuted at number 85."Shadow of a Man" was unable to enter the UK Singles Chart, as chart rules prohibit a single artist from having more than three songs charting in the same week; "Abracadabra", "Die with a Smile", and "Garden of Eden" were at numbers 3, 18, and 23, respectively. However, the song entered the UK charts for best-selling singles, most-downloaded singles, and most-streamed singles at lower positions. Elsewhere in Europe, it peaked at number 120 in Portugal, number 164 in France, and number 43 on the Greece International Chart published by IFPI. It also appeared on several airplay charts, reaching number 55 in Russia, 59 in Romania, 136 in Belarus, and 84 on the Commonwealth of Independent States Airplay chart.
