Sceptridium
Sceptridium is a genus of seedless vascular plants in the family Ophioglossaceae, closely allied to the genus Botrychium. It is also closely related to the genus Botrypus. Sceptridium species are commonly called the grape-ferns.
These plants are small with fleshy roots, and reproduce by spores shed into the air. They differ from the moonworts in having at least some sterile fronds, and in the fronds being bi- or tri-pinnate ; and from Botrypus in being evergreen, or at least winter-green and having the non-spore-bearing part of the frond long-stalked.
Taxonomy
The Smith et al. classification of 2006, based on molecular phylogeny, lumped Sceptridium within Botrychium, in the Ophioglossaceae, which was continued in the Christenhusz et al. classification of 2011 and the Christenhusz and Chase classification of 2014. It is recognized as a distinct genus in Ophioglossaceae by the Pteridophyte Phylogeny Group classification of 2016.Phylogeny
