The station opened on 15 May 1899. It became part of the JR East network following the privatization of Japanese National Railways on 1 April 1987.The tracks of the Yamagata Line were re-gauged from narrow gauge to standard gauge between 1988 and 1992 as part of the Yamagata Shinkansen project. Since then, the Yamagata Line has operated exclusively with standard-gauge rolling stock and is physically disconnected from other sections of the Ōu Main Line beyond Shinjō.
The current station building was completed in March 2003.
