History
The Museum of Nebraska Art was originally formed in 1976 as the Nebraska Art Collection. It was originally operated by Kearney State College and did not have a permanent facility. By 1985, the museum had outgrown its rented space, and purchased the former U.S. Post Office that same year. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981, and was vacated previously after the post office moved further downtown. The building was expanded and renovated for use as a museum. Construction was completed in 1986, and the new facility opened that same year.In 2021, the museum closed for another set of extensive renovations and another addition. The addition would add to the museum, and was built using mass timber construction. The museum re-opened in May 2025.
