Mayiladuthurai Junction railway station
Mayiladuthurai Junction is a major railway station located in Mayiladuthurai, Tamil Nadu, India. It is managed by the Tiruchirappalli railway division of the Southern Railway zone of Indian Railways. Classified as an NSG–3 and "A++" category station, it has five platforms and serves as a junction for multiple rail routes in the region. The station supports 12 originating, 12 terminating, and approximately 66 train services daily.
Overview
Mayiladuthurai Junction lies on the Chennai Egmore–Thanjavur main line, a historically significant route linking Chennai to the Cauvery delta region. The station plays a pivotal role in regional transportation, facilitating both passenger and freight movement across Tamil Nadu.History
The Junction was established in as part of the Chennai Egmore–Thanjavur main line, constructed by the South Indian Railway Company. It later became a junction with the addition of branch lines, including the Mayiladuthurai–Karaikudi section via Thiruthuraipoondi, Pattukkottai, and Aranthangi.In 1880, the South Indian Railway Company completed a 715 km metre-gauge trunk line from Chennai to Tuticorin via Cuddalore, Chidambaram, Mayiladuthurai, Kumbakonam, and Thanjavur. Before this, several sections had already opened in 1877, including:

- Shyali –Mayiladuthurai
- Mayiladuthurai–Thanjavur

Gauge conversion
Several key gauge conversion projects have modernized the region’s rail network:Thanjavur to Mayiladuthurai, Converted from MG to BG and opened in 2006.
Villupuram to Mayiladuthurai, Converted from MG to BG, inaugurated on 10 May 2010.
Tiruvarur to Mayiladuthurai, Converted from MG to BG and opened on 16 December 2011.
Electrification
The Cuddalore-Mayiladuthurai-Thiruvarur section was commissioned on 28 January 2020.The Mayiladuthurai-Thanjavur section was completed in the end of 2020 and it was commissioned on 14 February 2021.
