Limansky District


Limansky District is an administrative and municipal district, one of the eleven in Astrakhan Oblast, Russia. It is located in the southwest of the oblast. The area of the district is. Its administrative center is the urban locality of Liman. As of the 2010 Census, the total population of the district was 31,952, with the population of Liman accounting for 28.2% of that number.

History

In 2005 the Limansky District saw sectarian conflict between the native Kalmyks and Chechen migrant workers over an incident involving a monument on the grave of Kalmyk Eduard Kokmadzhiev. After a Kalmyk was killed during the clashes, the Kalmyks organized a pogrom of the Chechen population with houses being set on fire with support from the local Russian administration.
