In July 2019, Carpenter released her fourth studio album, Singular: Act II. In a June 2019 interview with Marie Claire, Carpenter revealed that she had already begun work on a fifth studio album, indicating her intention to continue evolving her musical style and exploring new themes.
On February 7, 2020, Carpenter teased the release of the single "Honeymoon Fades" by posting a photograph with the caption containing a combination of emojis representing the song title. She officially announced the song on February 13, 2020, describing it as a Valentine's Day gift to her fans. The single was subsequently released on February 14, 2020. The cover art for the single was photographed by Carpenter's sister, Sarah Carpenter.
Regarding the song, Carpenter described it as a personal message to her audience, stating:
