Hayford Akrofi


Hayford Akrofi was a Ghanaian political activist and architect who was murdered in cold blood at his residence in Ofankor.

Early life and education

Akrofi came from Tutu-Akwapim Hills in the Eastern Region of Ghana. He was educated at Ghana Senior High School.

Career

He was an architect who worked with State Housing Corporation and an advocate for the use of high grade local material like Pozzolana cement to save the country's funds.

Political life

Akrofi was the vice-chairman of the UK and Ireland branch of Convention People’s Party, secretary to the Consultative and Coordinating Committee of the CPP Central Committee. He was a chief spokesman of his party on the critical campaigns against GMOs, the plant Breeder's Bill and the EPA.
He was the president of the National Union of Ghana Students from 1974 to 1976 who challenged the military dictatorship of Acheampong. He organized the International Students Conference against Imperialist Penetration in Higher Education in January 1976 which contributed to the admission of two Europe-based Ghanaian students organizations.
Akrofi was the Vice President of Movement for Peace and Democracy formed in the late 1980s by former student leaders working under Sarpong Boateng, a former minister and ambassador to Cuba.
He was awarded the Membership of the Royal Institute of Architects and was an executive member of the Black Architects group.

Personal life

Akrofi was a lay preacher of the Methodist church and a devoted family man with a wife and three daughters.

Death

Akrofi was murdered by a burglar on 23 June 2014. He died at 64 years leaving a wife and three children. Books of condolence were opened at Convention People's Party headquarters in Asylum Down for the public and another one at Nyaniba Estates in Osu near Katawodieso park provided by the immediate and extended family.
