East Whittier, California


East Whittier is an unincorporated community in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 10,394 at the 2020 census, up from 9,757 at the 2010 census. For statistical purposes, the United States Census Bureau has defined this community as a census-designated place. The name was changed from East La Mirada in 2012, likely due to its precise location in relation to the city of Whittier.
The previous delineation of East Whittier CDP occurred during the 1960 census, when the area recorded a population of 19,884. This delineation encompassed different boundaries than the current East Whittier, including areas that were annexed to Whittier, California in the 1960s.

The 2020 United States census reported that East Whittier had a population of 10,394. The population density was. The racial makeup of East Whittier was 42.7% White, 2.0% African American, 1.9% Native American, 7.3% Asian, 0.3% Pacific Islander, 23.5% from other races, and 22.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 57.1% of the population.
The census reported that 99.1% of the population lived in households, 0.9% lived in non-institutionalized group quarters, and no one was institutionalized.
There were 3,370 households, out of which 37.3% included children under the age of 18, 55.0% were married-couple households, 6.8% were cohabiting couple households, 25.3% had a female householder with no partner present, and 13.0% had a male householder with no partner present. 16.7% of households were one person, and 8.5% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 3.06. There were 2,616 families.
The age distribution was 22.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% aged 18 to 24, 26.4% aged 25 to 44, 26.5% aged 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65years of age or older. The median age was 38.6years. For every 100 females, there were 91.6 males.

The 2010 United States census reported that the CDP had a population of 9,757. The population density was. The racial makeup of the CDP was 7,022 White, 178 African American, 78 Native American, 462 Asian, 20 Pacific Islander, 1,557 from other races, and 440 from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4,907 persons.
The Census reported that 9,742 people lived in households, 15 lived in non-institutionalized group quarters, and 0 were institutionalized.
There were 3,295 households, out of which 1,298 had children under the age of 18 living in them, 1,826 were opposite-sex married couples living together, 479 had a female householder with no husband present, 201 had a male householder with no wife present. There were 195 unmarried opposite-sex partnerships, and 21 same-sex married couples or partnerships. 619 households were made up of individuals, and 303 had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.96. There were 2,506 families ; the average family size was 3.36.
The population was spread out, with 2,356 people under the age of 18, 1,117 people aged 18 to 24, 2,636 people aged 25 to 44, 2,389 people aged 45 to 64, and 1,259 people who were 65 years of age or older. Fire services are provided by Los Angeles County Fire Department via Fire Station 15, located at 11460 Santa Gertrudes Avenue. Station 15 is staffed with four personnel that are deployed on a Quint fire apparatus.
Paramedic services are provided from nearby stations in La Mirada, and La Habra.
