This enzyme belongs to the family of lyases, specifically those carbon-oxygen lyases acting on polysaccharides. The systematic name of this enzyme class is glycoconjugate sialyl-lyase . Other names in common use include anhydroneuraminidase, sialglycoconjugate N-acylneuraminylhydrolase , and sialidase L.
