Adikavi Nannaya University


Adikavi Nannaya University is a state university located in Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh, India. It was established on 22 April 2006 through the Government of Andhra Pradesh Act No. 28 of 2006. The university, located in Rajahmundry on the banks of the River Godavari, was named in honor of Adikavi Nannaya, the first poet of Telugu literature. Adikavi Nannaya University has extension campus at Kakinada and Tadepalligudem.

History

Adikavi Nannaya University was established on April 22, 2006, through an act of the Andhra Pradesh State Legislative Assembly. It is named after Nannayya, the first attested author of a text composed in the Telugu language. The establishment of the university occurred during the tenure of Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, who served as the Chief Minister of united Andhra Pradesh from 2004 until his death in 2009. The university was a fulfillment of the long-standing aspirations of the people in the region for a higher education institution.

Academic programmes

Adikavi Nannaya University offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in both **academic** and **professional** streams. Academic degrees emphasise theory and research, whereas professional degrees focus on job-specific skills and are regulated by national professional bodies.The university attends to the educational needs of both Godavari districts. Currently, all seventy-four postgraduate institutes as well as the undergraduate colleges located within the aforementioned districts maintain their government-mandated university affiliation with Adikavi Nannaya University. These colleges were previously affiliated with Andhra University.

Academic bachelor's degreesBachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Commerce are offered through the University College of Arts & Commerce and the University College of Science & Technology.Professional Bachelor's Degrees – AKNU provides Bachelor of Education, Bachelor of Physical Education, Bachelor of Technology, Bachelor of Pharmacy programmes via the University College of Engineering, the two-year Bachelor of Education through the University College of Education, and vocation-oriented qualifications such as Bachelor of Physical Education, Bachelor of Computer Applications and B.Voc. specialisations.

Postgraduate Degrees

AKNU’s postgraduate portfolio includes both academic and professional options. Academic Master’s DegreesMaster of Arts, Master of Science and Master of Commerce are offered in numerous specialisations across arts, science and commerce. Professional Master’s Degrees – Professional pathways include Master of Business Administration, Master of Computer Applications, Master of Education, Master of Technology and Post-Graduate Diplomas.
The university initiated a program in Geo-Informatics and Petroleum Exploration, the first of its kind in Andhra Pradesh and one of the few in the country. In the second phase, keeping in view of the government policy of encouraging five-year integrated courses, the university designed and offered a new course in Mathematics and Computing, with the objective of providing trained programmes to the I.T. industry.
