Abdur Rab Chowdhury
Abdur Rab Chowdhury was a Bangladesh Nationalist Party politician and member of parliament for Lakshmipur-4.
Birth and early life
Advocate CSP Abdur Rab Chowdhury was born in 1934 in Seba village of Alexander Union, Ramgati Upazila, Lakshmipur District. His father was the late Fazlur Rahman. In 1949, he passed Matriculation in the first division from Ramgati Bibike Pilot High School, Intermediate of Arts in 1951 from Chaumuhani SA College, Bachelor of Arts in 1953, and subsequently Master of Arts in 1955 from the University of Dhaka. Thereafter, he obtained his Bachelor of Laws degree under the same university.Career
Abdur Rab Chowdhury served as the General Secretary of Dhaka University Central Students' Union during the 1954-55 term. In 1956, he began his career after passing the Central Superior Services examination. He served as Administrator of Naogaon Subdivision, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Khulna, District Administrator of Dinajpur, Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Education, and Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Finance in Islamabad. In 1970, he served as the Divisional Relief Commissioner of Chittagong, and in 1972, he performed duties as the Chief Relief Coordinator of the country. In 1973, after being appointed Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, he resigned in 1974 and began practicing law in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh. He was a member of the advisory council of the Bangladesh Awami League. Previously, he had also been a member of the advisory council of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.He was first elected as a Member of Parliament from the Lakshmipur-4 constituency in the 1991 Fifth National Parliamentary Election as a nominee of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. Subsequently, he was re-elected as a Member of Parliament from the same constituency in the Sixth National Parliamentary Election on 12 February 1996 as a BNP nominee.
In the 2001 election, after failing to secure nomination from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, he joined the Awami League and contested the election but was defeated. He was also defeated as an Awami League candidate in the 2008 national election.
