White-winged brushfinch

The white-winged brushfinch is a species of bird in the family Passerellidae.

Taxonomy

The White-winged brushfinch is divided into three subspecies in two groups with the following distribution:leucopterus/dresseri group

* A. l. leucopterus – Andes of western Ecuador
* A. l. dresseri – Andes of southwestern Ecuador A.l. paynteri – northern Peru

Since 2016, Birdlife International and the IUCN have recognized paynteri as its own species, the "Cream-crowned Brushfinch".

The white-winged brushfinch is a grey and white finch-like bird. Its plumage varies somewhat, with birds in the northern part of its range having a completely black face and chestnut-brown crown, while those further south have white and light crowns. Distinct white wing patches distinguish it from the Bay-crowned brushfinch.
