Vladimir Lenin bibliography

Vladimir Lenin was a Russian communist revolutionary, politician, and political theorist. He served as head of government of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic from 1917, and of the Soviet Union from 1922 until his death. Based in Marxism, his political theories are known as Leninism.

Modern controversy

In 2012, Russian historian requested Alexander Bastrykin, Chairman of the Investigative Committee of Russia, to conduct an investigation whether Lenin's works contain calls for extremism and justify terrorism. If a publication is recognized as extremist, it is included into the Federal List of Extremist Materials — producing, storing or distributing of these is an administrative offense in Russia punishable by fine. He argues that the cornerstone of Leninism is "the incitement of social discord and the promotion of the inferiority of people based on their social status. <...> Moreover, Lenin's works imposed social racism and social genocide on our country—the destruction, including physical annihilation, of the bourgeoisie and nobility, the clergy and old Russian intelligentsia, the hard-working peasants, and the Cossacks." In his appeal, Lavrov gives about 30 examples of Lenin's works, which, he argues, constitute offenses on multiple counts. This appeal was seconded by bishop Hilarion, First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia.
Since the collapse of the Soviet Union there have been a number of calls to put Vladimir Lenin on trial, notably by Valeriya Novodvorskaya, however, as of 2025, these did not have any legal consequences. Still, before and after Lavrov's call there have been criminal cases which included requests for expert opinion on the presence of extremism in Lenin's works on which the actions of the defendants were allegedly based, e.g., the 2025 "Ufa Marxists Case" or the 2011 case of the organization"Курсом правды и единения".
