Variable goshawk
The variable goshawk is a bird of prey native to Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. It was recently elevated to species status, and was previously lumped together with the grey goshawk. This species was formerly placed in the genus Accipiter.
Subspecies
Twenty-two subspecies are recognised:- T. h. sylvestris – Sumbawa to Alor Island. Lesser Sundas goshawk is sometimes elevated to species status.
- T. h. polionota – Damar Island and Babar Islands, Banda and Tanimbar is.
- T. h. mortyi – Morotai
- T. h. griseogularis – Halmahera, Ternate, Tidore and Bacan Islands and Gebe
- T. h. obiensis – Obi Islands
- T. h. hiogaster – Kelang, Seram, Saparua and Ambon
- T. h. pallidiceps – Buru
- T. h. albiventris – Tayandu Islands and Kai Islands
- T. h. leucosoma – New Guinea and many satellites
- T. h. misoriensis – Biak
- T. h. pallidimas – D'Entrecasteaux Archipelago
- T. h. misulae – Misima and Tagula Island
- T. h. lavongai – New Hanover Island, New Ireland and Dyaul Island
- T. h. matthiae – Mussau Island
- T. h. manusi – Admiralty Islands
- T. h. dampieri – Umboi Island and New Britain and satellites
- T. h. lihirensis – Lihir Island and Tanga Islands
- T. h. bougainvillei – Buka Island, Bougainville Island and Shortland Islands
- T. h. rufoschistacea – Choiseul Island, Santa Isabel and Florida Islands
- T. h. rubianae – New Georgia
- T. h. malaitae – Malaita
