Reception

The Manchester Evening News called it "a gently amusing play."
The Daily Telegraph felt "the script was implausible but not in a way that was amusing even with a good deal of overacting. Ronald Lewis put an enormous effort into the part of a contented young man whose peace of mind is shattered."

Controversy

Following the broadcast of the play, a Welsh housewife, Phyllis Williams, robbed a store with a plastic toy pistol. She claimed she got the idea after watching The Grandma Bandit telling the court "It looked so easy that I thought I would try it."
