History
Early history and facilities
The history of public education in Tell City dates back to the city's founding by the Swiss Colonization Society in 1858. The first dedicated school facilities were established shortly thereafter, with the local public school system being "placed upon a sound basis" by 1867. As the city's population grew due to its expanding furniture manufacturing industry, larger facilities were required. A substantial brick school building was constructed in 1895 at 10th and Tell Streets to serve the growing student body, remaining in use until the late 1920s.1929 Building
The current high school building, located at 900 12th Street, was constructed in 1929. The "original 1928 building," as it is often referred to in school histories, was a major investment for the community and was designed to house grades 9 through 12. The building features classic brick architecture characteristic of the era. Over the decades, it has undergone multiple renovations and expansions to accommodate modern educational needs, including a significant renovation in the 1960s to support the consolidation of county schools and another in the 1990s to update athletic and science facilities.Consolidation with Troy High School
A major shift in the school's demographics occurred in the mid-20th century due to school consolidation in Perry County. For decades, the neighboring town of Troy operated its own high school, Troy High School. However, the Indiana School Reorganization Act of 1959 spurred a wave of mergers across the state to create more efficient school districts. As a result, Troy High School was closed, and its students were consolidated into the Tell City system. This merger expanded the Tell City-Troy Township School Corporation and significantly increased the enrollment at Tell City High School.Athletics
