Tangiwai Shield
The Tangiwai Shield is a Test cricket series played between the men's cricket teams of New Zealand national [cricket team|New Zealand] and South [Africa national cricket team|South Africa]. It was launched in February 2024 during South [African cricket team in New Zealand in 2023–24|South Africa's tour of New Zealand].
The trophy commemorates the tragic events of 1953, when 151 people on the train from Wellington to Auckland on Christmas Eve - including Nerissa Love, the fiancé of New Zealand fast bowler Bob Blair - lost their lives in the rail disaster. The disaster coincided with the South Africa in 1953–54#Second Test|second Test between New Zealand and South Africa], where Bob Blair was playing the match.
