Synthesis

Sulfonyl diisocyanate is obtainable directly from certain proportions of cyanogen bromide and sulfur trioxide:
The compound can also be obtained by reacting chlorosulfonyl isocyanate with silver cyanide at 150 °C.

Physical properties

The compound forms a volatile, colorless to pale yellow liquid that reacts violently with water to form carbon dioxide and sulfamide. The compound remains stable in sealed containers.
