Shashl
Ashleigh Angel Moyo, known professionally as Shashl, is a Zimbabwean singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist. She gained prominence as the first Zimbabwean female musician signed under Universal Music Africa. Following her departure from the label, Shashl transitioned from R&B to a more Afro-fusion and Zimbabwean sound, reflecting her personal and artistic growth.
Early life and education
Shashl was born in Harare, Zimbabwe, to Obadiah Moyo, former Minister of Health and Child Care, and Lucy Memory Moyo. She has three siblings, including a sister named Sherris. Shashl attended Hellenic Secondary School and later Dominican Convent High School in Harare. Initially aspiring to study medicine, she ultimately pursued a career in music. 2017–2022: Career Beginnings and Universal Music Africa
Shashl began her music career in 2017 with the release of her debut single "No More." In 2018, she became the first Zimbabwean female musician to sign with Universal Music Africa, releasing the single "Blow It in the Wind" under the label. During her tenure with Universal, she released several singles and gained recognition in the African music scene.In March 2022, Shashl released her debut 14-track album, Highway, produced by Levels of Chillspot Records. The album showcased her R&B roots and included tracks like "Dhindindi," "In My Heart," and "Manyepo."
2023 – present: Independent Career and Musical Evolution
After parting ways with Universal Music Africa, Shashl embarked on an independent career, exploring a fusion of Afro-pop and traditional Zimbabwean sounds. In 2024, she released the EP Butterflies, featuring tracks like "Nemoyo," "Dalla," "Remedy," and "Softly," which marked a departure from her earlier R&B style.On 21 June 2025, Shashl launched her second studio album, The First Quarter, at the 7 Arts Theatre in Avondale, Harare. The album blends Afro-pop, soul, and dancehall influences, reflecting her growth in sound and narrative. It features 11 tracks, including "Shine", "Weakness", "Womera", "Kumagumo", and "Perfect Somebody." The event was attended by industry stakeholders and fans and included live performances with a full band.
As of June 2025, Shashl is reportedly in a relationship with businessman, who also sponsored her album launch event.
