His family included his father Thiruvenkadam, his mother Vedammal, and brother Kamalakannan. Thiruvenkadam died when Senthamarai was seven years old. Senthamarai acted many stage plays along with Sivaji Ganesan and M. G. Ramachandran before entering film.
