Santiago Light Rail


The Santiago Light Rail, branded Monorriel, is a monorail under construction system in Santiago de los Caballeros, Dominican Republic. This will be the second urban rail transit system in the Dominican Republic.

Approval and construction

The construction of the light rail line crossing Santiago was approved by the Santiago municipal government. It is intended to help the city's traffic problems. Originally awarded to the Spanish railway company FEVE, the line was supposed to be built in 14 months. The Dominican central government will not provide construction funds. As originally planned, the line would have ended at Cibao Airport, with a total length of. Construction was originally scheduled to begin in mid-2008, but was placed on hold in 2007.
In 2023, a new contract was awarded to Consortium SIF led by Alstom to build the line using the Innovia Monorail system. Spanning 13 km from Villa Olímpica to Cienfuegos with 14 stations, the line is now expected to open by 2028.
