Ruth Pelupessy


Ruth Pelupessy was an Indonesian actress, model, and entrepreneur. She was a popular actress during the 1980s and along with Suzzanna and Mieke Wijaya is known as the antagonistic female figure in the world of [Indonesian horror|Indonesian Horror film|horror films]. Pelupessy worked in a varied range of genres, from horror to comedy, and is known for her role in Rahasia Perawan which earned her the Citra Award for Best Supporting Actress and as Darmina in Satan's Slaves.

Early life and education

Pelupessy was born on 27 April 1938 in Bangka Island, Bangka Belitung Islands. She went to Girls' Skills Teacher School until the second grade.

Career

Pelupessy started her career as a model by joined Indonesian Modelling Agency lead by Non Kawilarang, the mother of actress Rima Melati. The modeling activities on the catwalk continued even though she was married. Director Asrul Sani considered Pelupessy suitable to play the character of Corry and then cast her in Salah Asuhan which was an adaptation of the novel of the same title by Abdul Muis in which she starred along with Melati. Initially, she only wanted to appeared on the screen once, but according to Sani, she "couldn't let go.".
Pelupessy later starred in various films, such as Badai Remaja, Tokoh, Timang-Timang Anakku Sayang, Rahasia Perawan, Ranjang Siang Ranjang Malam, Rosita, Cinderella, Ira Maya Si Anak Tiri, and others. Her roles in films were always as lesbians, evil women, pimps, prostitutes, or stepmothers. At the 1976 Indonesian Film Festival, Pelupessy won Citra Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Rahasia Perawan which was directed by director Ali Shahab. The producer of the film, Hendrik Gozali, was surprised for her winning and later accepted the award for her in which he stated "I didn't expect her to win at all, so I didn't invite her to Bandung, she came with another producer.". Apart from being an actress, Pelupessy was also known as a bamboo furniture entrepreneur. She then starred in Satan's Slave as Darmina and earned a title as the female antagonist in horror films whose position has not been replaced until now in the Indonesian horror film scene along with Mieke Wijaya as Dora in Beranak Dalam Kubur and Suzzanna as Piah in Napsu Gila. After starred in Perkawinan Nyi Blorong, she retired. Pelupessy was involved in a comedy film with Warkop titled Sabar Dulu Dong...! in which she portrayed Mevrouw Rudolf, a hotel guest who caused a commotion because she walked in her sleep.

Personal life

Marriages, relationship, and children

Pelupessy was married for two times. Her first marriage resulted in two children. In 1974, Pelupessy lived together with actor Hendra Cipta who was nine year her junior and was married to him at civil registration in May 1977. She saw Cipta reciting the Quran and asked what it meant. Cipta answered that he didn't know and Pelupessy replied by saying "how do you pray if you don't know the meaning." to which Cipta answered again "what is important to me, carry out obligations, meaning the obligation to pray" and she replied back by saying "how would I convert to Islam if you just don't know what it means.". The conflict then became increasingly sharp and each confirmed their own religion with Pelupessy who was Protestantism and Cipta who was Muslims. She then said angrily "If I had known this, we wouldn't have gotten married in the first place.". They later divorced in January 1979 with Pelupessy said "now, I have to love God first, then man, otherwise God will jealous.".
As of 1979, she resided at Kayu Manis II/18 Street in Jakarta.

Death

Pelupessy died in Jakarta, Indonesia, on 21 October 1996 at the age of 58. Her death led to her name being retold after her retirement.
