Rio del Mar is an unincorporated village in Santa Cruz County, California. Rio del Mar is one of several small villages that form the unincorporated community of Aptos, California. Its population was 9,128 as of the 2020 United States census. For statistical purposes, the United States Census Bureau has defined Rio del Mar as a census-designated place.
Etymology
The name, from Spanish: Río del Mar, meaning river of the sea, was chosen to promote real estate in the area during the 1920s.Geography

The 2020 United States census reported that Rio del Mar had a population of 9,128. The population density was. The racial makeup of Rio del Mar was 79.3% White, 0.6% African American, 0.7% Native American, 4.0% Asian, 0.3% Pacific Islander, 3.4% from other races, and 11.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 13.2% of the population.The census reported that 99.8% of the population lived in households, 0.2% lived in non-institutionalized group quarters, and no one was institutionalized.
There were 3,878 households, out of which 23.9% included children under the age of 18, 53.6% were married-couple households, 6.1% were cohabiting couple households, 26.4% had a female householder with no partner present, and 13.9% had a male householder with no partner present. 25.8% of households were one person, and 15.7% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.35. There were 2,587 families.
The age distribution was 17.1% under the age of 18, 6.7% aged 18 to 24, 16.9% aged 25 to 44, 31.9% aged 45 to 64, and 27.4% who were 65years of age or older. The median age was 51.5years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males.

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 899 people.The census reported that 9,210 people lived in households, 6 lived in non-institutionalized group quarters, and no one was institutionalized.
There were 3,916 households, 1,050 had children under the age of 18 living in them, 2,082 were opposite-sex married couples living together, 337 had a female householder with no husband present, 139 had a male householder with no wife present. There were 228 unmarried opposite-sex partnerships, and 32 same-sex married couples or partnerships. 1,008 households were one person and 486 had someone living alone who was 65 or older. The average household size was 2.35. There were 2,558 families ; the average family size was 2.82.
