Red Bull Batalla de los Gallos

Red Bull Batalla de Los Gallos or known as Red Bull Batalla, is an annual freestyle competition that takes place worldwide in multiple Spanish countries. It began on October 2, 2005 and as of January 1, 2026, will return on 11 April 2026 in Chile. The event is considered as the highest class of Freestyle competitions due to the high level of competition and the historical importance over time. The event also helped Artists give life to their music careers. Such as Wos, Aczino and Skone Not least, was the foundation of multiple future Freestyle Competitions. The event is hosted on YouTube and Red Bull TV live for free all around the world.

History

Beginnings (2005–2009)

The idea of the competition had come through in 2002, after the release of Eminem's 8 Mile film, a film that had made Rap and Freestyle grow to a higher scale of popularity and be taken more seriously as a business model. Before then being founded in 2005 as Red Bull Batalla. The event had been decided to be a "road to the final" type of event. Where multiple artists from different countries would be signed to compete in a National event to then qualify for the final event of the year. That being an International event, where all the qualified rappers from the countries would compete on the big stage at once. Its first ever event was on the 30th of September 2005 in Venezuela. and its first ever International final was in Perù on the 2nd of October 2005. The final of 2005 was set at the Club Gallístico, the event contained a total of eight participants and was won by Argentinian Rapper Frescolate, whom beat Eric el Nino. The event had been a successful hit from the start, garnering a large audience, leading Red Bull and the crew to make the event an annual thing. The number of participants and countries would then start to grow over time and in 2007, the first female contestant, Kim, would join the list of contestants.

Temporary shutdown (2009–2012)

Although the event would keep on being successful, in 2009, Red Bull would announce that the 2009 event would be the last event of the competition for the time being. It would be in fact entitled: "la batalla final". The event would be smaller than the previous four tournaments and it would only contain three rounds, unlike the four in the previous four events. That event would be won by Noult, who beat Mcklopedia in his second final loss in a row. The event would then return after a three-year break in 2012 with an album entitled: "Solo Los Mejores Improvisan"

Refoundation and success (2013)

In 2013, the event would return for its first ever event since its closure five years ago and it would be set in Argentina. The event would be set just like its inaugural one with eight participants and three phases. The event would be won by hometown Argentinian Dtoke, who would beat Mexican Jony Beltran in the final. In 2014, the event would have its first ever third place play-off. An extra bonus phase where the semifinalist losers would compete against each other to be crowned bronze medalists/third place podium sitters. During the resurgence, the event would over time grow even more popular across many other states. Such as America and Italy and the viewership would skyrocket, including the audience attendance, with the 2016 edition in Perù obtaining a record of 25 million spectators. For the 2020 event, due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, there would be no audience and the event would be in closed doors. In 2025, the event would celebrate its 20 years milestone. In 2023, a side event entitled Red Bull Batalla 5 Vidas was created in which ex champions and ex contestants of the event compete in a one night elimination tournament where each contestant has five lives and whoever can get to the end and defeat the final opponent without losing all five of them wins the belt.

Rules

The competition revolves around two contestants competing with another contestant face to face. In each of the phases, the contestants are drafted with an opponent in their own selective slot. Whoever is first, is the first contestant, whoever is fifth, is the fifth contestant. Once the contestants arrive on stage, the host of the event would say out loud the topic of the "diss" to give to the opponent. The topic must be respected and cannot be diverted. Then, in the final stage of the battle, the contestants are all given one minute of freedom to say whatever they want. If the flare of the words are better than the opponent, the contestant wins and viceversa. Most lyrics derive from vulgar slurs or innuendos like "i'll fuck your mother". The aspect of the competition goes along as such:
  1. The event is a four phase way road to the final. Whoever wins against the opponent moves on.
  2. The topics that are given to the opponents by the host must be satisfied and cannot be changed or modified in any way.
  3. No hands and no punches can be used.
  4. If the contestants lose the semifinal, they will go on to the third place play-off against the other losing semifinalist.
  5. The finale goes the same as the previous phases, but in the final stage, the contestants have free will to say whatever they want. If the judges are pleased, one of the two wins the title. If the vote is tied, a repeat is done until the vote is marger.

Editions

Throughout the event's longevity, a total of 18 editions have been completed. Its latest one is planned in Chile on 11 April 2026. Meaning that so far, 18 champions have been crowned.

1, Chuty was the winner by the votations, but as you can see, one of the judges, Dozer, has been "confused" and he was searching one of the signs to vote, but he finally decided to vote to a replica. This sparked a major controversy, during which videos emerged of Dozer holding up Chuty's sign, after having voted to replica. Finally, the tournament organizers themselves .
2For being the 20th anniversary, the 2025 edition doesn't exist.

Aczino VS Wos

One of the most remembered feuds in the history of the event was the face off between Argentinian Wos and Mexican Aczino. Their first ever meeting was at the 2017 Red Bull Batalla de los Gallos in Mexico. At the time, Wos was still new to professional freestyling, having competed in the primary school of Freestyle and later to be cult classic "El Quinto Escalon" while he was still young, and not having too much of experience yet. However, during the national Red Bull Batalla in Argentina, he had shown masterclass in being able to rhyme perfectly with the flow, throw lines and be able to comeback naturally to almost everything. He would in fact win that event with pure dominance. While Aczino had arleady competed in the last three editions of the event, but hadn't done much in any of them. Both would be favourites to reach the final due to their incredible skill and they would do so. The finale would be remembered for being a cuthroat battle for the title, with both Wos and Aczino throwing some intense flare. In the end, it would be Aczino that would win the title in his hometown Mexico. But the year later, this time in Wos's hometown, Wos would get his revenge and win the title in his own home, with the famous line of: "you tell me you'll win, i can't hear you. If i win either way, it won't change a thing. Whoever loses will leave with pride, that's the difference between your country and mine!" That line would be cemented into the battle and he would win the event with four out of four votes. In 2019, Wos would then state that he would retire from Freestyle competitions to focus on his music career. However, he would compete in the Double AA, where he would meet Aczino in the semifinal, beat him and then win the 2018 title. Meet him in the first part of the 2019 God Level in Mexico and lose to him for the second time, before meeting him in his final Red Bull Batalla in 2019. Where he would for the first time in his career be knocked out in the first stage of a competition. After that, Wos would leave the stage, while Aczino would go on to win more titles in various other freestyle competitions. The 2019 fight is in fact the most viewed fight of the entire Red Bull Batalla event's history.

Reception and Legacy

The event has often been praised for its intense atmosphere on stage, the variety in topics for the battles and the charisma and energy of the hosts during all the events. The historical importance of the event has also been praised, with many battles still being watched by millions even to this day and the event always reaching millions of viewers live on YouTube and Red Bull TV. The event has also been the mainstream creation for many future freestyle competitions.
