Pittsburgh Steamship Company
The Pittsburgh Steamship Company began operations in 1899 by Henry W. Oliver. In 1901 the company became a subsidiary of the United States Steel Corporation. The company owned and operated many freighters such as SS Leon Fraser from 1942 to 1982 and the SS William A. Irvin from 1938 to 1978 when the Irvin was retired and the SS James A. Farrell from 1912 to 1978, the company also operated the St. Mary’s Challenger from 1906 to the late or mid 1970s, and the Irvin S. Olds from 1942 to 1988
