History

The Pittsburgh Independent Film Festival was established in August 2006 by Ronald Quigley.Quigley, who was born and raised in Pittsburgh, worked as a firefighter for the City of Pittsburgh for 21 years before retiring. He later became involved in acting and filmmaking, which contributed to the creation of the festival.
The festival is held as a three-day event and includes screenings of short films, feature films, documentaries, animated works, experimental films, music videos, and screenplay competitions. In 2026, the festival will add a category for AI-generated content. Each year, more than 60 films are screened, with submissions reported to come from multiple countries.
