Phullen


Phullen is a town in Saitual district, in the Indian state of Mizoram.
As per the Constitution of India and Panchayati Raj Act, Phullen is administrated by a Village Council who are the elected representatives of the village. It is located east of the State Capital Aizawl, which is also the capital of Mizoram. Phullen is a Block headquarters of Phullen Block, which is bounded by Darlawn Block towards west, Ngopa Block towards East, Thingsulthliah Block

History

Phullen, formerly known as Khandaih, was established in 1901 by Chief Vanphunga Sailo. The village holds an important place in the early educational and Christian history of Mizoram.
In 1903, the first permanent village school outside Aizawl was established at Khandaih by British missionaries, with the approval of the British colonial administration and Chief Vanphunga Sailo. The first Christian marriage among the Mizo people is recorded to have taken place there in 1904, between Hrangsaipuia, a teacher at the Khandaih School, and Saimanliani.
In 1905, the village was affected by a severe epidemic known locally as Khandaih Hripui, during which more than 50 adults reportedly died within about three months.
The first major Christian revival in the Lushai Hills occurred at Khandaih on 8 April 1906, contributing significantly to the spread of Christianity in the region.
Following the 1906 revival, early Christian converts in Khandaih faced social opposition and persecution. Chalbuanga of Khandaih, who died in 1906 due to persecution related to his Christian faith, is widely regarded as the first Christian martyr in Mizoram.

Culture

The population of Phullen is made up of different ethnic groups. The culture of the Mizo tribes and its social structure has changed since the arrival of Christianity in Mizoram. People of Phullen celebrate Christmas festival, New Year, Chapchar Kut

Administrative structure

Phullen is headed by the Village Council President. Almost all issues regarding the village administration are under this authority. The President and Village Council Members exercised all matters of village administration with regards to law and order and development projects. Some aid groups such like Mizo Association and Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl
