United Kingdom

In 1990, Sam Goody entered the UKmarket and established a presence in a number of English towns, such as, and Stockport, with a "deep catalogue" retail format that included a large amount of "recurrent" musicalbums and videos. However, whereas this format might have been successful in the UnitedStates in the1980s and early1990s, in the UnitedKingdom it came under pressure from a range of price led and established retailers. By1999, SamGoody had exited theUK, selling its stores off to rival retailers. At the height of the chain's UKpresence, there were 22stores; only14 remained when the company exited the country.
