Mustapha Abdullahi


Mustapha Abdullahi  is the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Nigeria. He was appointed to the position by President Bola Tinubu on 24 October 2023. Prior to his appointment as the third DG of the ECN, Abdullahi was the Senior Technical Adviser to the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Geoffrey Nnaji. Abdullahi is a chartered Engineer and a member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers

Early life and education

Abdullahi was born in January 1985 in Kano, but he hails from Okene Local Government Area in Kogi State.
He has a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Kano [State University of Technology|Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology]. Proceeded to obtain an MSc from the University of Salford, UK. Abdullahi gained a Postdoctoral fellowship as a Research Associate in the School of Engineering at the University of Manchester after securing funding award from the Industry Collaboration Fund. He received his PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering at University of Manchester with a focus on oil and gas structural health monitoring.

Career

He was appointed by President Bola Tinubu on 24 October 2023, as Director General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria. Abdullahi was before then the Chief of Staff and the Senior Technical Adviser to the Federal [Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology|Minister of Innovation Science and Technology] Chief Uche Gregory Nnaji.
Prior to joining Nnaji at the ministry, he served as a Research Associate and Teaching Assistant in the Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and [Civil Engineering, University of Manchester|School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Civil Engineering at the University of Manchester] and was a staff member of the former Department of Petroleum Resources, now Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission. Abdullahi had also worked at the National Space Research and Development Agency with a cumulative experience in oil & gas, Renewable Energy, Sustainability, space technology, and research, having worked at NUPRC and NASRDA for over 14 years.

Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN)

The Energy Commission, in collaboration the United Nations Environment Programme and other partners, launched a training program in the skills needed to enforce energy performance standards for air conditioners in the country.
He was part of Nigeria's delegation to COP 28 in Dubai UAE where he represented Nigeria's commitment to Global Cooling Initiative.
On the sidelines of the event, he sealed a tripartite agreement with an energy consulting group, the Global Wind Energy Council, and the Niger State Government on wind energy development in Niger State.
