Moses Speer

Moses Speer was an American Civil War veteran from Giles [County, Tennessee]. He served during the mid-19th century and later settled in Americus, Sumter County, Georgia, where he lived until his death. Speer is credited as building the first brick building in the city of Americus, Georgia.
He is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Americus.

After the Civil War

Following the Civil War, Moses Speer returned to Americus and subsequently became the President and Director of the Bank of Southwestern Georgia. Also, an investor in a number of enterprises, including the Savannah, Americus & Montgomery Railway and the Windsor Hotel. He was active in civic life and helped to establish the public school system and public library in Americus. Where he served as the treasurer.
