Med dvema stoloma is a novel by Slovenian author Josip Jurčič. It was first published in 1876.
Plot
The story is set in the countryside and follows the lives of two young people: Nikolaj Kolodej, a well-educated young man from a wealthy rural family, and Tončka Pridan, a genuine country girl. Nikolaj, who has just returned from his studies, is initially attracted to Tončka. However, he is soon introduced to her city cousin, Luiza Vit, a sophisticated and beautiful woman. He becomes torn between the two, between the simple, honest world of the village represented by Tončka and the seemingly more exciting and corrupt city world embodied by Luiza.Nikolaj quickly enters a relationship with Luiza, abandoning Tončka. But as he navigates the urban environment, he discovers Luiza's materialistic and deceitful nature. After a double tragedy at home. The death of his father and the loss of his family's property. he realizes his mistake and returns to Tončka, seeking forgiveness. However, Tončka has matured and is no longer the naive girl he once knew. She firmly rejects him, symbolizing her ethical strength and the preciousness of true love. Nikolaj's life then spirals downward, and he eventually joins the army and disappears, having lost both his wealth and his honor. Meanwhile, Tončka finds happiness with a simple farmer and starts a family.
