Mahendra Kumar Singh


Dr. Mahendra Kumar Singh is a senior leader of Bhartiya Janata Party and serving his 3rd term as Member of Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council since 2012. He previously served as Cabinet Minister in first Yogi Cabinet.

Early life

Dr. Mahendra Kumar Singh was born on March 15, 1967, in the village of Karmahi, located in the Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Raised in a traditional farming family, he is the son of the late Ramdas Singh and the late Indumati Singh. Growing up alongside his four brothers, Dr. Singh’s early life was defined by the values of hard work and rural heritage. He pursued his higher education at the University of Lucknow, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts, a Master of Arts, and eventually a PhD in 2003. His transition into public life began during his student days, fueled by his involvement with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh starting at the age of 16. Professionally, he served as a professor at the University of Lucknow before fully dedicating himself to a political career that saw him rise to become a Cabinet Minister for Jal Shakti and a key strategist for the Bharatiya Janata Party. He is married to Gita Singh, and the couple has one son and one daughter, maintaining a life that balances his deep-rooted family ties in Pratapgarh with his extensive political responsibilities across India.

Political career

Dr. Singh's political career began with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh and its student wing, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad.

Early years and local governance

1987–1989: Joined the RSS as a swayamsevak and became an active worker for the ABVP.1992–1994: Held various leadership roles within the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, serving as Department Coordinator and Mandal President in Lucknow.1995: Elected as a Corporator of the Lucknow Municipal Corporation representing the Guru Nanak Nagar ward.

State leadership and Legislative Council

Singh rose through the state organizational hierarchy of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Uttar Pradesh:2000: Appointed State Vice President of the BJYM.2006–2007: Served as Regional Secretary of BJP UP and subsequently as State General Secretary.2012–Present: Elected to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council for three consecutive terms.

National roles and election management

Singh is recognized as a key strategist for the BJP's expansion into non-traditional territories:Assam: Appointed State In-charge for Assam in 2014. He is credited with leading the party to its first-ever victory in the 2016 Assembly elections and managed the state's 2019 Lok Sabha campaign.Tripura and Madhya Pradesh: Served as election in-charge for Tripura in 2022. In 2024, he was appointed State In-charge for Madhya Pradesh to oversee the Lok Sabha elections.

Minister of Rural Development (2017–2019)

During this period, the department received 12 National Awards from the Government of India in 2018. These awards recognized the state's performance in implementing central schemes, including the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana and MNREGA.

Minister of Jal Shakti (2019–2022)

As the inaugural Jal Shakti Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Singh spearheaded the "Har Ghar Jal" initiative under the Jal Jeevan Mission. His focus remained on providing piped water infrastructure to the water-stressed regions of Bundelkhand and Vindhyachal.

Working with Prime Minister Narendra Modi

Singh's administrative work has been frequently cited at the national level. In 2018, while receiving 12 national awards at Vigyan Bhawan, he attributed the success to the implementation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for rural development.
