Mahanadi Coalfields
Mahanadi Coalfields Limited is a major coal-producing company in India and one of the eight subsidiaries of the state-owned Coal India Limited. It was carved out of South Eastern Coalfields Limited in 1992, with its headquarters located in Sambalpur.
MCL operates coal mines across Odisha, with a total of seven open-cast mines and three underground mines in Jharsuguda district and Angul district.
MCL has two subsidiaries with private companies as a joint venture. The name of these companies are MJSJ Coal Limited & MNH Shakti Ltd.
There are 45 sanctioned mining projects in MCL with a capacity of 190.83 Mty of coal. The total capital outlay of 45 projects is & out of which 28 with a total capacity of 73.98 Mty have been completed by 1 April 2009 with a sanctioned capital investment of. Out of the 28 completed projects, 2 have been exhausted. One Expn. Project, namely, Lajkura Expn. It is going to be approved within a short period.
Approval of Garjanbahal OCP has been stalled temporarily due to a delay in getting Forestry clearance. Seventeen ongoing projects, i.e., Kulda OCP, Bhubaneswari OCP, Kaniha OCP, Bharatpur Expn. Ph.-III, Balaram OC Extn., Ananta Expn. Ph.-III, Lakhanpur Expn. Ph.-III, Hingula Expn. Ph.-III UG, Natraj U/G, Jagannath U/G, Bharatpur OC Expn. Ph-II, Lakhanpur Expn., HBI UG Aug., Basundhara Expn. and two JV projects, Gopalprasad OCP, Talabira OCP, with a capital investment of are under implementation.
In December 2024, the company has produced 203 MT of coal, reflecting a 9.8 percent increase compared to the previous year. In 2021, South Eastern Coalfields Limited was the largest coal-producing subsidiary of Coal India Limited. However, in 2022, SECL’s production declined to 142.5 MT, and MCL surpassed it with a coal output of 168.2 MT.
