Regular season: Overtime goals

If a game is tied after regulation time, there will be a period of "overtime" to decide the winner. The player who scores during these extra five minutes is given the overtime goal. All overtime in the NHL is sudden death—meaning the first team to score is the winner—so the player who scores in overtime also has the game-winning goal.
