Archdeacon of Hereford

The Archdeacon of Hereford is a senior ecclesiastical officer in the Church of England Diocese of Hereford. The archdeacon is the senior priest with responsibility over the area of the archdeaconry of Hereford.

History

The first recorded archdeacons in Hereford diocese occur soon after the Norman Conquest – there were apparently two archdeacons from the outset. However, no territorial titles are recorded until after. The archdeacons at that time were the Archdeacons of Hereford and of Shropshire ; the latter was renamed Archdeacon of Ludlow in 1876.
