Together with the other brackish lakes, such as the neighboring Möldri Sea, it is a relic of the eastern branch of the Silmen Strait, which formerly separated Noarootsi Island from the mainland. The Swedish name Bäckesjoen literally means 'brook sea' or 'stream sea'.
