Gourmandises


Gourmandises is the debut studio album by French singer Alizée, released domestically on 28 November 2000, and worldwide on 13 March 2001 by Polydor Records. Production and composition was managed by Laurent Boutonnat, and lyrics were written by Mylene Farmer. The album features recurring themes of youth, sensuality, innocence, love, and curiosity, often expressed through playful and poetic language. Critically, Gourmandises was lauded as a standout in [Contemporary pop|modern French pop]. Reviewers praised Alizée’s vocal performance and the album’s musical direction, noting its blend of electronic and pop elements. The album's production, led by Laurent Boutonnat and Mylène Farmer, was compared to the work of English producer William Orbit, particularly his contributions to Madonna's 1998 album Ray of Light. Lauded by critics as a masterpiece in the contemporary French pop repertoire, the singer and the album were honored by one of the highest accolades given by SACEM, the Prix Vincent Scotto in 2002. The NRJ Music Awards, M6 and many others media and music institutions nominated the singer, including her nomination to the Victoires de la Musique in the "Revelation Album of the Year" category.
Four singles were released from Gourmandises. The lead single, "Moi... Lolita", peaked at number two on the French Singles Chart and was certified diamond by SNEP for sales exceeding one million copies. Internationally, it reached number one in Italy, number two in Spain and Belgium, number five in Germany, and number nine in the United Kingdom. The second single, "L'Alizé", debuted at number one in France, received a platinum certification, and charted in Belgium, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. The third single, "Parler tout bas", peaked within the top 20 in France and charted in Belgium and Switzerland, and was certified gold. The final single, "Gourmandises", reached the top 40 in France, was certified gold, and appeared on charts in Belgium and Switzerland.

Background

In 1999, Alizée appeared on the M6 channel's talent show Graines de star. Initially she intended to sign up for the program's dance contest, but that category was reserved for groups only. Alizée therefore joined the singing category instead, performing the song "Waiting for Tonight" by Jennifer Lopez and "Ma Prière". She went on to win the Meilleure Graine award for most promising young singing star of tomorrow. Her winning performance was seen by Mylène Farmer and Laurent Boutonnat, who were looking for a young, fresh voice to partake in their new project. They approached Alizée, and she was selected after studio auditions.
In early May 2000, French media outlets revealed that singer-songwriter Mylène Farmer and composer Laurent Boutonnat were launching a new musical project with a previously unknown teenager named Alizée Jacotey, along the title headline of "Leur bébé s'appelle Alizée". The announcement was notably made in the 8 May 2000 issue of Voici magazine, which referred to her as the duo’s “new protégée.” Alizée had been selected following her participation in the talent show Graines de Star, where she caught the attention of Farmer and Boutonnat. The single "Moi… Lolita" was recorded in secrecy and sent to French radio stations through a promotional CD on 18 May 2000. This marked the first time Farmer and Boutonnat had collaborated on a project for another artist, effectively introducing Alizée to the French pop scene.

"Lui ou toi" explores the emotional confusion of being torn between two romantic interests. Promotion

The promotion for Gourmandises followed a tightly controlled and sophisticated strategy from the start. As RFI reported, “Operation Lolita” was orchestrated by producer duo Mylène Farmer and Laurent Boutonnat as if launching a military campaign: interviews were severely limited, photo sessions were refused, and the centerpiece became a visually bold video for "Moi... Lolita". Domestically, the strategy paid off: Gourmandises sold over 800,000 copies in France, and "Moi... Lolita" alone sold approximately 1,500,000 copies in that market within its initial run. After establishing that base, her team pushed for international exposure: Alizée performed in Amsterdam and subsequently in markets like Russia, Germany, Austria, Poland, and the UK, including on UK television, to extend her appeal beyond francophone territories.

Moi... Lolita

L'Alizé

"L'Alizé" is the second single by French pop singer Alizée, released on 28 November 2000 through Polydor and Universal Music. The song was written by Mylène Farmer and composed and produced by Laurent Boutonnat, the same team behind Alizée's debut hit "Moi... Lolita." Musically, "L'Alizé" blends French pop and dance-pop elements, featuring breezy synths and a catchy chorus that evoke the metaphor of trade winds, aligning with the song's title, which translates to "The Trade Wind." Upon release, "L'Alizé" achieved significant commercial success across Europe. In France, it debuted at No. 1 on the SNEP Singles Chart and remained in the top position for two consecutive weeks. Parler tout bas

"Parler tout bas" is the third single from French pop singer Alizée's debut album, Gourmandises. Released on 14 April 2001 by Polydor and Universal Music, the song was written by Mylène Farmer and composed and produced by Laurent Boutonnat. Departing from the upbeat tone of her previous singles, "Parler tout bas" is a melancholic ballad that delves into the introspective journey of adolescence, capturing the delicate transition from childhood innocence to the complexities of young adulthood. The record charted for a total of 84 consecutive weeks, finally exiting on 20 July 2002 at number 138. Its sustained presence translated into strong year-end positions, ranking at number 51 for 2000 despite charting only in December, rising to number 12 in 2001 during its peak popularity, and appearing again at number 146 in 2002. Reflecting its enduring commercial impact, Gourmandises was certified double platinum in France by the Syndicat National de l'Édition Phonographique for sales of over 800,000 copies, securing Alizée’s status as one of the most successful new French pop artists of the early 2000s.
In Belgium, Gourmandises entered the Ultratop Albums Chart at number 37 on 16 December 2000 and gradually built momentum into the following year. It reached its peak at number 7 in early 2001, holding that position for one week, and remained on the chart for a total of 49 weeks before exiting on 22 December 2001 at number 46. Its sustained success placed it at number 12 on the Belgian year-end albums chart for 2001, reflecting its strong performance throughout the year. Commercially, Gourmandises was certified gold in Belgium by the Belgian Entertainment Association for sales exceeding 25,000 copies, consolidating Alizée’s presence in the francophone pop market outside of France. In Switzerland, Gourmandises debuted on the Swiss Albums Chart at number 33 on 10 December 2000, and went on to remain a consistent seller for more than a year. The album reached its peak position of number 27 where it stayed for two non-consecutive weeks, and charted for a total of 50 weeks, before leaving the rankings on 5 May 2002 at number 94. In Germany, Gourmandises made a modest but notable entry into the market. It first charted in the Official German Albums Chart on 3 December 2001, debuting at its peak position of number 29, which it held for a single week. Over the following months, the album remained on the charts for 21 weeks, gradually descending, before its final recorded placement at number 90 on 22 July 2002. While it did not achieve a high peak or long-standing top-ten status in Germany, its nearly five-month presence nonetheless demonstrates a measure of cross-border appeal beyond Alizée’s francophone audience. In Finland, Gourmandises had a brief chart run in 2002. The album entered the Finnish Albums Chart in week 18 at number 26, its peak position, and remained on the chart for five consecutive weeks, before exiting in week 23 at number 32. Although short-lived, its top-30 debut highlighted Alizée’s ability to reach markets beyond Western Europe. In Italy, the album entered the Italian Albums Chart on 9 May 2002 at number 43, and gradually climbed to its peak of number 27, which it held for 1 week. It stayed on the chart for a total of 5 weeks, with its last appearance on 18 July 2002 at number 50. While its commercial impact was modest compared to francophone markets, the album’s Italian performance reflected Alizée’s growing recognition in Southern Europe.
In Austria, Gourmandises made a modest impact on the Ö3 Albums Chart, where it entered on 2 December 2001 at number 69. Over the following weeks it climbed steadily, reaching its peak position of number 40, before dropping off on 3 February 2002, after a run of nine weeks in the top 75. In the Netherlands, the album fared slightly better, debuting on 12 May 2001 at number 55 on the Dutch Albums Chart. It rose to a peak of number 36 the following week, and remained on the chart for a total of eleven weeks, before exiting on 21 July 2001 at number 97. The album Gourmandises experienced notable commercial success in Europe and internationally. In Europe, it was certified Platinum by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry for sales exceeding 1,000,000 units. The album reached a year-end placement of number 77 on the European Albums Chart, compiled by Music & Media, indicating moderate performance on the European Albums Chart. Worldwide, Gourmandises sold approximately 4,250,000 copies, reflecting its international reach and popularity. The album’s sales and certification demonstrate its commercial impact within the pop music market of the early 2000s.

Critical reception

Gourmandises received positive reviews from contemporary critics upon its release. In 2013, following speculation about Alizée's fifth album, 5, critics referred to Gourmandises as a "pop masterpiece of the contemporary music", calling it a "classic" of the 2000s decade and of the new millennium. In an article for The Daily Princetonian, Eric Harkleroad wrote:
A writer from Je ne sais pop wrote, "Alizée's debut undoubtedly took her high and far: it was the introduction of a charming teenage singer who would make an impact, even if she never surpassed this first album. But above all, it captures Farmer/Boutonnat at the height of their inspiration..." A review written by the website Laut.de describes the album as, "Musically, "Gourmandises" doesn't sound like a precocious children's album, but rather impresses with a quite diverse mix of beautifully arranged rock and pop sounds. This is no surprise considering that none other than Laurent Boutonnat wrote and produced the songs. While some of the ten songs are reminiscent of earlier Mylene Farmer numbers, Alizée's delicate, fresh, and erotic voice lends the songs a special, individual touch."
The online music magazine Krinein Musique, in a review dated 29 June 2001, awarded Gourmandises a score of 7 out of 10, summarizing it as “commercial but talented”. The reviewer defends the album against superficial judgments focused solely on Alizée’s image or attire, arguing that she presents as “seductive, refined, friendly and talented” and that the album is clearly tailored to appeal broadly, a strategy which aligns with its strong commercial success, reportedly selling over one million copies. Musically, Krinein highlights engaging moments, particularly citing the third single “Parler tout bas” and “À quoi rêve une jeune fille”, noting that Alizée’s joy and passion for music are contagious and that the album is overall a relaxing listening experience.
The review also takes issue with critiques targeting Alizée’s “innocent doll” persona or the album’s commercialism, suggesting that commercial success is no less valid than the carefully curated rebellious personas adopted by artists like Oasis or Rammstein in their own contexts. While acknowledging the appealing melodies and strong vocal performance, the review critiques the lyrics as lacking substance—a deliberate choice, perhaps, aimed at crafting simple, memorable phrases resonant with adolescent audiences. Lyrical themes are identified as centering on love, youth, leisure, and even references to Corsica, Alizée’s familial heritage.

Following the release of Gourmandises, Alizée was named "Europop Queen" by NRJ Radio. Newspaper Le Figaro named Mylène Farmer as the French artist who had made the most revenue from copyright in 2001, earning 10.4 million euros as a singer, songwriter, composer and producer of Alizée. Alizée received public praise on television channels, such as M6 and NRJ Radio. Among other nominations and awards, she was nominated for the Victoires de la Musique in 2001. The following year, Alizée received the World Music Award from the IFPI for top sales of her Gourmandises album, with additional support from her debut single, "Moi... Lolita". In 2003, Alizée received an award from SACEM. She received one of the most prestigious honors for her debut album, the Prix Vincent Scotto award.
