Firearms News was originally founded in 1946 under the name Shotgun News, making it one of the oldest continuously published firearms magazines in the United States.
In December 2015, the magazine was rebranded as Firearms News to better reflect its broader editorial scope beyond shotguns. Editor David Hunter Jones explained that the name Shotgun News had become a misnomer, as the publication had long covered all types of firearms. The rebranding included design upgrades.
