Filippo Boncompagni
Filippo Boncompagni was an Italian Cardinal, created by Pope Gregory XIII on 2 June 1572.
Biography
Born in Bologna, son of Bolognese Patricians Boncompagno Boncompagni and wife Cecilia Bargellini and brother of Angela Boncompagni, wife of Girolamo Pepoli, without issue. His father was brother of Pope Gregory XIII, Giacoma Boncompagni, married secondly to Angelo Michele Guastavillani, and another married sibling, children of Cristoforo Boncompagni and wife Angela Marescalchi, and paternal grandchildren of Giacomo Boncompagni and wife Camilla Piattesi.He served as superintendent general of the Papal States during his pontificate. He occupied several curial offices. He participated in the papal [conclave, 1585] as a leader of the cardinals created by Gregory XIII. He was buried in the Liberian Basilica, of which he was archpriest.
