Far North District Council


Far North District Council is the territorial authority for the Far North District of New Zealand.
The council is led by the mayor of Far North, who is currently Moko Tepania. There are also ten ward councillors.

History

The council was formed in 1989, replacing the Bay of Islands County Council, Kaikohe Borough Council, Kaitaia Borough Council, Hokianga County Council, Mangonui County Council and Whangaroa County Council.
In 2020, the council had 384 staff, including 55 earning more than $100,000. According to the right-wing Taxpayers' Union think tank, residential rates averaged $2,428.

Community Boards

The Far North District currently has 3 community boards, Bay of Islands-Whangaroa, Kaikohe-Hokianga and Te Hiku. Geographically they cover the entire district and are synonymous with the general ward boundaries.
The Bay of Islands-Whangaroa Community Board has 7 single member subdivions, Kawakawa-Moerewa, Kerikeri, Paihia, Russell-Opua, Waipapa and Whangaroa.
  • Kaikohe-Hokianga Community Board
The Kaikohe-Hokianga Community Board has 6 members representing 3 subdivions, Kaikohe, North Hokianga, South Hokianga.
  • Te Hiku Community Board
The Te Hiku Community Board has 6 members representing 4 subdivisions, Doubtless Bay, Kaitaia, North Cape, Whatuwhiwhi.
