Encarna Abad


Encarna Abad was a Spanish actress whose career spanned from the late 1930s until her retirement in the 1990s.

Biography

Abad's stage career began in the 1930s as a student of Pérez de León y Tablilla Acting School, and her professional debut was in musical theatre after the Spanish Civil War. She joined company and appeared in comedic roles in Pablo Luna's ' and Francisco Alonso's '. She performed in ' alongside comedy trio ; El oso y el madroño ;and Su majestad la mujer, all three under composer Jacinto Guerrero.
In the late 1950s, she appeared in vedette roles in Día y noche de Madrid, Torre de arena, and El visón de Lulú. She performed in sainete productions including Cuidado con la Paca and El niño de las coles, both by José de Lucio. She changed her stage name from Encarnita to Encarna in the early 1960s and ended her musical theatre career to focus solely on comedy. She appeared in Lope de Vega's '
, Alfonso Paso's Un 30 de febrero, La gobernadora with Francisco Piquer and Un sereno debajo de la cama with Carmen Maura. In 1972, she traveled with the Tirso de Molina company to the German Federal Republic to perform Miguel Mihura's ' for Spanish immigrants.
She completed many projects under director, including Jean Anouilh's Los peces rojos, Muñoz's '
, Jardiel's ', Létraz's Una noche en su casa... señora, Mihura's ', Jardiel's ', Castro's ', Salinas' Judit y el tirano, Benavente's ', ', Zorrilla's Don Juan Tenorio, and Casona's '. In 1995, she appeared in Picospardo's under the direction of Mara Recatero at the Teatro Español. In addition to stage work, she also began working in television in the mid-1960s, particularly in televised theatre programmes like Estudio 1. She also appeared in the films ' in 1961 and in 1962.
Throughout her career, she was part of several acting companies, including those under Gaspar Campos, Adela González, and Juan Espantaleón, as well as the house company at Teatro Español.
Abad retired in the late 1990s. Abad died on 10 October 2014, at the age of 86–87.
